Harry Styles explains why he turned down The Little Mermaid Prince Eric role

For one brief shining moment it seemed as if Harry Styles was going to play Prince Eric in the The Little Mermaid. Sadly, it wasn’t meant to be.

It turned out that Styles had actually turned the role down. But why?

Styles has the singing prowess, we know that from his successful music career, and his acting debut in Dunkirk went down well with critics – fans were baffled. On the surface it seemed Styles was ready to play the Disney prince, so why did he turn it down?

Speaking to The Face, Styles revealed he wanted to focus on his music rather than his blossoming acting career.

He said: “It was discussed. I want to put music out and focus on that for awhile. But everyone involved in it was amazing, so I think it’s going to be great.

“I’ll enjoy watching it, I’m sure.”

Who will play Prince Eric?

Prince Eric is yet to be cast though a few names have been thrown in the ring. The latest star linked to the role is 13 Reasons Why’s Christian Navarro. The actor shared a post on Instagram following the news that he auditioned for the role.

He said: “Just a brief reminder that there’s always another mountain, another goal to strive after, and with your help I’ll keep pushing the limits. Wouldn’t it be amazing if we had a truly multicultural Little Mermaid?! Fingers crossed beautiful people,”

At least we already know who will play Ariel. African-American actress, Halle Bailey, was cast earlier this year. She suffered from a bit of backlash as some fans used the hashtag ‘NotMyAriel’, but Bailey brushed off the criticism to share her excitement.

“I don’t pay attention to the negativity, I just feel like this role was something bigger than me, and greater,” she said.

The Little Mermaid will be released in 2020.
